The Dutch city of Amsterdam may not be the biggest in Europe - but it's definitely one of the best. In fact the city proper only has around 800k residents but the place has the granduer and confidence of a genuine metropolis. It's worth also bearing in mind that Amsterdam forms part of the Randstad ("Rim City") which is a conurbation that also incorporates Rotterdam, Utrecht and The Hague and has a population of millions.
For English people who don't know any Dutch, the Netherlands is an incredibly easy place to get by. Everyone seems more than happy to speak English, and they speak it fluently too - making the country seem genuinely bilingual.
